Six Ways To Sunday

Gentle Listener,

I'm always impressed by the talent in my core group of friends. Whether it be artistic talent, such as that exhibited by Guy Tensen or architect Tony Bochicchio, or singing talent such as that of our Iowa Correspondent and Man About Town, Loren Christensen, my friends never fail to impress me. And so, when something new comes about, I feel compelled to tell the world, so what better way to do that than to announce it via this blog, Festung Europa.

The novelty to which I am referring is the creative corpus of Mr. Kevin Brocker, singer-songwriter from Urbandale, Iowa, which is, as you may know, part of the Xarlon Metroplex. Kevin has been writing some really great stuff in an alternative/pop/alt-country genre, and I think that you, gentle listener, would be advised to check him out at Reverbnation, where you can currently listen to 19 of his songs. For those of you on that omnipresent Internet platform, Facebook, you can "like" his band page there as well. And finally for you scrobblers out there on Last.fm, his page is here.

I also recommend that those who live in or around the Xarlon Metroplex go see Kevin and his band, Six Ways To Sunday, tomorrow on New Year's Eve at the Hilton Garden Inn. He'll be joined onstage by Paul Rottenberg, Guy Tensen and Mark Boals.

Kevin is indeed a consummate musician, and in addition to writing and singing these songs, he performs on all the instruments in these recordings, from the bass to the drum kit to, of course, the electric guitar. My personal favorites are 40 Acres, Deadbeat, Bar Fight and Protest Song.

For me, Kevin's songs reflect that existential angst that comes with middle age, the sort that makes you want buy a Porsche and ditch the wife for a newer model, or hunker down in a rest stop restroom and fellatiate a .44 magnum. The presumed immortality of youth has given way to the numbing reality of being forty something. And yet, despite the despair, hope prevails and love long lost may indeed return. It is the music of our times.
