An Outstanding Essay on Regionalism

As you, dear reader, may have guessed, it is my intention to convert you to my worldview.

There, with that notification of intent out of the way, here is a link to a super essay from Bill Kauffman's new book, Look Homeward, America: In Search of Reactionary Radicals and Front-Porch Anarchists. It laments the end of the regionalist movement at the beginning of the Second World War, when it was replaced by a globalism that has been a guiding force in American culture ever since. And the essay features one of my favorite artists, the Iowan, Grant Wood.

We need more regionalist movements! If the Peak Oil folks are on the money, regionalism may be the only alternative in a world without cheap oil. The global economy as we know it simply will not function without cheap energy. Think of all the plastic junk that everyone (the Americans, the Europeans, etc.) imports from China. It won't be so cheap in 20 years. The future lies closer to home.
