The previous game is a bit daunting, so here is one that is just as fun and for the beginning wargamer, a lot more playable. It is Panzer General II, also from the 1990's and SSI. There are a lot of mods out there for this game, allowing you to add scenarios, maps, units and even change the whole thing from World War II to the Napoleonic and Civil Wars.
