Astronomy Alert!

Gentle stargazer,

Unfortunately we here in southern Germany are looking at snowfall and overcast skies around sunset today, meaning we'll miss the occultation of Venus by the moon and their conjunction with the planet, Jupiter. For those in North America, there will be no occultation, but the conjunction should still be worth a look. Go out and look to the southwest at sunset. Venus is the bright planet near the moon's edge, Jupiter is above the pair and slightly to the right.

Here's a video I created in Starry Night Pro Plus 6, showing the occultation as we could have seen it from Fürth, if it weren't snowing! The time starts at 16:00 CEST, and advances at 300x normal.

Cathy and I have been watching Venus and Jupiter here is Florida. The first time i saw it I was immediately struck by the brightness and the proximity of what I thought were stars at the time and how they were positioned under the moon. I would have swore the bright one was moving back and forth in the sky.
