Jon Von Feldt - In Memoriam

Gentle reader,

I couldn't find an official obituary, so I put these thoughts together from previous posts on my blog and other information on the Internet. Rest in peace, Big Shooter.

Jon Von Feldt

March 31, 1966 - March 22, 2022

Jon Von Feldt, affectionately known as "The Big Shooter," passed away tragically after a motorbike accident on May 19, 2022, at the age of 56 in St. Charles, Iowa. Jon was born in Webster City, Iowa, and leaves behind a legacy of camaraderie, adventure, and a zest for life.

Jon's college years were marked by his membership in Adelante Fraternity in Ames, Iowa. He was introduced to the fraternity by fellow Webster Citians Shel Jones and Tom Esk, and during that time, he became known for his quick wit and expert "joshing" skills. Jon had a remarkable ability to deliver absurd stories with a straight face, keeping his friends on their toes. His pranks often brought laughter and relief, such as his famous "undercover cops" joke that would initially stir concern but ultimately bring a wave of relief.

The nickname "Big Shooter" perfectly encapsulated Jon's passion for hunting and the great outdoors. He was an avid hunter, mastering the skills necessary to track, shoot, and savor the thrill of the chase. Jon's expertise in hunting earned him recognition as a certified Master of the Hunt, earning the title Jägermeister, a testament to his commitment to the craft. He relished the challenge of hunting, spending countless hours waiting patiently in tree stands and celebrating the victorious moments when he captured his prized buck or demonstrated his exceptional archery skills.

Beyond hunting, Jon was known by his friends as "Opie," a reference to his red hair, freckles, and his amiable, easygoing personality that evoked comparisons to the beloved character Opie from "The Andy Griffith Show." He shared many enjoyable moments with his roommate, Guy, known as T or Scott, bonding over late-night TV marathons of classic shows like "The Beverly Hillbillies." Jon's carefree nature and infectious laughter brought joy to those around him, making him a cherished friend and companion.

Jon's business acumen led him to pursue a career in agribusiness after his college years. Alongside his partner, Dennis Rebuhn, he founded a successful business in Ames during the late 1980s, becoming pioneers in introducing paintball to Iowa State University. Their entrepreneurial spirit and love for the game brought them success, and Jon's strategic prowess contributed to their victories on the paintball field.

Jon's life took him on various paths, including a marriage to his beloved wife, Nancy, and the birth of their son, Mick. He found professional fulfillment working as a sales manager for Monsanto in southern Iowa, combining his passion for agriculture with his business expertise. Later he founded his own business. Outside of work, Jon continued to embrace the outdoor lifestyle, enjoying family vacations and creating memories with his loved ones.

Tragically, Jon's life was cut short due to a fatal motorbike crash on May 19, 2022. It was a sudden and unforeseen accident caused by a mechanical failure, which resulted in the front tire locking up and ejecting Jon from his bike. He was flown to a Des Moines hospital but was later taken off life support on May 22, 2022, with no suffering.

Jon Von Feldt will be remembered as a kind-hearted, adventurous individual who made the most of every day. He lived life to the fullest, cherishing his family, friends, and the great outdoors. His warm smile, quick wit, and infectious laughter will forever echo in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Jon is survived by his loving wife, Nancy, their son, Mick, and a wide circle of family and friends who will forever cherish the memories they shared. His passing leaves a void in the lives of those who held him dear. As we mourn the loss of Jon Von Feldt, let us also celebrate the remarkable spirit and adventurous soul that he embodied. May his legacy serve as a reminder to live each day to the fullest, to find joy in the simplest moments, and to cherish the bonds of friendship and family. Jon's memory will forever be etched in our hearts, and his spirit will continue to inspire us to embrace life's adventures with enthusiasm and a twinkle in our eyes.

In this time of sorrow, we extend our deepest condolences to Nancy, Mick, and all those who loved Jon. May you find solace in the memories you shared and the love that surrounds you. And may Jon rest in eternal peace, forever roaming the wild landscapes he treasured, forever remembered as "The Big Shooter."
