Back to Saskatchewan Mailbag: Letter One's Runic Interpretation

Announcer: We now return to the Back to Saskatchewan Mailbag on GBCN.

snazzy, jazzy return from commercial break music

Mark: Hi folks, we're back with the Defensemaster of the Stingray Regime and his advice to those souls who wrote us with questions regarding that most wonderful of feelings, love. The Defensemaster has been contemplating his rune cast for a tormented soul in the heart of the Xarlon Metroplex, so let's go back to Asgard and see what he has come up with.

Lots of static on the screen as the Defensemaster comes into view. His head is bowed, but he raises it slowly and speaks....

Defensemaster (in a low voice): The runes have indeed spoken to us, Mark. Our friend's situation falls currently under the rune, Othila, in it's upright form, and which also is the last rune in the futhark.

Mark: What's a futhark?

Defensemaster: A futhark is just a way of speaking about the Germanic runic alphabet, sort of like you would say the A-B-C's for English. The word consists of the six beginning letters of the runic alphabet: Fehu, Uruz, THurisaz, Ansuz, Raido and Kenaz.

Mark: Ah, I see. Too bad Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five didn't do a song about it like they did the ABC's.

Defensemaster (irritated): Please, Mark, let's be serious here.

Mark: OK, sorry.

Defensemaster: Othila is a rune, as I mentioned before, that originally stood for inherited, immovable wealth, such as one's ancestral lands and holdings. Today, we can take it to mean property, meaning one's possessions. Our friend is in a situation where his possessions, what he owns, is coming into play. Or it may be that he is coming into an inheritance of sorts, perhaps receiving wealth from the outside. In any case, his romantic situation is currently influenced by what he owns.

Mark: Perhaps this is one of the reasons he feels so hindered. He mentioned some reluctance to make the jump, more on the part of his new found lover, but maybe what he has is holding him back.

Defensemaster: That is a possibility. His wife, two kids and mortage are placing the burden on him as such that he perhaps feels regret for having even gone so far with this new woman in his life.

Mark: So if his situation is that of being held by what he possesses, how would you interpret the next rune, the one that recommends a course of action on his part? What did you say it is called?

Defensemaster: The next rune concerning his action in the present is that of Sowelu, originally representing the sun. Sowelu represents wholeness, the striving of one's self to a higher purpose. It calls in a sense for a release of the ego, which almost parallels Eastern thought, but to open one's self up to new possibilities and and become, in a sense, a new individual. So I think here that what it is calling upon our friend to do is to open up, let the past go and strive to be a more integrated individual.

Mark: How could that relate to the actions he should take with regard to this new relationship, or to his old relationships?

Defensemaster: As I see it, Mark, Sowelu is calling upon him to focus on achieving wholeness in his life by letting go of preconceived notions of what his life should be and just be who he indeed is. Become what you are, in a sense. His focus should not be on trying this or that to push his new relationship one way or another, but instead, he should open himself up to the possibilities and just go with the flow. If he sheds his ego, his true self will shine.

Mark: I think I get it, eh. So what sort of future would this shedding of the ego and becoming who he truly is entail?

Defensemaster: Well, Mark, the rune for his future situation is that of Laguz, upright. Laguz traditionally represented water, such as a lake or the ocean. Water is, of course, pulled by the tides of the moon, so we have a lunar rune following a solar one, contrasting each other, almost like the symbolism in a Taoist yin-yang symbol.

Mark (giggling): What did you say about a yin-yang?

Defensemaster: Like the symbol representing a unity of opposites.

Mark: Oh.

Defensemaster: Please, Mark, stop joking. While the solar symbol of Sowelu strives for diffentiation, in that our friend would find his true self, Laguz symbolizes an immersion, a unity. By shedding his ego and becoming who he truly is, he can be united with his true love. I'm not going to go so far as to say that his true love lies in this young lady with whom he is involved, but this rune, representing water, indicates that a cleansing of his former self will occur, and like the moon pulls the tides, he will be pulled to that which he truly loves and be able to immerse himself in it.

Mark: That's sounds plausible, eh. But what do I know! (laughing)

Defensemaster: It is, of course, my interpretation based on the runes cast. It is also said that Laguz is representative of the sacred marriage, that union of two souls who come together as one, as is often the case in fairy tales. I can't say if this union is to be with this woman with whom our friend is infatuated, but I can say that if he searches for Sowelu and finds it, he can live happily ever after. And so, in short:

Dear Lost in Love,

Don't hang onto your possessions. Drop your ego. Become who you are. Immerse yourself into the bliss of sacred union.

Mark: Sounds great, eh! Let's hope our friend takes the advice of the runes. Thanks for your runic interpretation, Defensemaster.

Defensemaster: Don't mention it, Mark. But we do have more letters to go through, do we not?

Mark: Of course! We've got more where that came from.

Defensemaster: Hopefully not too many more from the Xarlon Metroplex. I can't stand that place. I only go there when well disguised using Mr. Hologram™.

Mark: We'll stay away from those letters if you wish, sir.

Defensemaster: Oh, it doesn't really matter anyway. (speaking to waitress passing by) Could I have another Asgard Appletini, please? What do you have next, Mark?

Mark: Before we get to the next letter on our Mailbag, we have a special musical treat in store for you, folks. Live on our stage here at the beautiful Prospector Theatre in downtown Uranium City, Saskatchewan, is a Canadian gentleman who has enjoyed a long, successful career as our preeminent folk musician. Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in welcoming Leonard Cohen!
