The Disappearance of the Bees

A while back in a post regarding Littlefield Apiaries in Exira, I entered a link to an article in Salon decrying the mysterious disappearance of bees in the western U.S. What is causing entire hives of bees to die off? It seems as though the problem of Colony Collapse Disorder, or CCD, is not limited to this region. Here is an interesting hypothesis: cell phone transmissions maybe causing the bees navigation systems to get screwed up, causing them to lose their way back to the hive and die a lonely death.

If this is indeed the case, we may have the choice of either going back to the landline or starving to death. Albert Einstein, the archetypal genius, is quoted as saying that mankind would have only four years of life left if the bees died off. I doubt some nanotechnologist is going to come up with a tiny pollinating robot anytime soon, so I hope that the reason for the bees' disappearance can be verified and a solution implemented before it is too late.
